  37. Chromosome 6 Ring is a rare chromosomal disorder in which the patient has
  38. a breakage of chromosome 6 at both ends, and the ends of the chromosome join
  39. together to form a ring.  The amount of genetic material lost at the two ends
  40. of the chromosome can vary.  As a result, a patient with very little absent
  41. genetic material may have no apparent symptoms while a patient with a
  42. significant part of the chromosomal ends missing may have many symptoms.  The
  43. most apparent features of this disorder are mild to severe mental
  44. retardation, delays in growth and self-controlled muscle movement
  45. (psychomotor retardation), a small head circumference and jaw, low-set ears,
  46. a flat nasal bridge, and/or abnormalities of the eyes.

  48. Symptoms

  50. Chromosome 6 Ring is a very rare chromosomal disorder in which the symptoms
  51. depend on the amount of genetic material lost on the small and long arms
  52. (ends) of the sixth chromosome.  As a result, patients symptoms can vary.
  53. Patients with very little missing genetic material may have no apparent
  54. symptoms while patients with a significant amount of material missing from
  55. the chromosome ends may have many symptoms.

  57. The features seen most often in patients with Chromosome 6 Ring are mild
  58. to severe mental retardation, delays in growth and self-controlled muscle
  59. movement (psychomotor retardation), a small head circumference and jaw, low-
  60. set ears, a flat nasal bridge and/or abnormalities of the eyes.

  62. Other symptoms that have been found in some patients with Chromosome 6
  63. Ring may be:  widely spaced eyes, a vertical fold of skin over the inner
  64. corner of the eye (epicanthal folds), a high-arched palate, club foot, fluid
  65. on the brain causing enlargement of the head (hydrocephalus), webbed skin, a
  66. short neck, downward slanting eyes, and/or widely spaced nipples.

  68. Causes

  70. Chromosome 6 Ring is a very rare chromosomal disorder caused by a deletion of
  71. chromosome 6 at both ends and a joining of the ends to form a ring.  The
  72. genetic material lost from the ends can vary from a small amount causing few
  73. symptoms to a significant amount causing many symptoms.  There is no apparent
  74. reason why this occurs.  Most chromosomal deletions occur "de novo" which
  75. means that they occur very early in the development of the embryo for no
  76. apparent reason.  The parents of the affected child typically have normal
  77. chromosomes and a very low possibility of having another child with a
  78. chromosomal abnormality.

  80. Affected Population

  82. Chromosome 6 Ring is a very rare chromosomal disorder that affects males
  83. slightly more often than females.  There have been approximately 17 cases of
  84. this disorder reported in the medical literature.

  86. Related Disorders
  87.  
  88. Many chromosomal disorders involving mental retardation have some features
  89. similar to Chromosome 6 Ring.  The only way to determine which chromosomal
  90. disorder a patient has is through genetic testing.  (For more information

  93. Therapies:  Standard
  94.  
  95. Patients with Chromosome 6 Ring and poor muscle tone may benefit from
  96. physical therapy.  Special education and related services will be of benefit
  97. to children with this disorder.
  98.  
  99. Genetic counseling may be of benefit for patients and their families.
  100. Other treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
  101.  
  102. Therapies:  Investigational
  103.  
  104. Research on birth defects and their causes is ongoing.  The National
  105. Institutes of Health (NIH) is sponsoring the Human Genome Project which is
  106. aimed at mapping every gene in the human body and learning why they sometimes
  107. malfunction.  It is hoped that this new knowledge will lead to prevention and
  108. treatment of genetic disorders in the future.
